Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers are a type of Nd:YAG laser that uses a Q-switch to produce short pulses of high-intensity light. Q-switching is a technique that allows the laser to produce extremely short pulses with very high peak power.
The Q-switching mechanism works by temporarily blocking the laser cavity, preventing the buildup of energy. When the Q-switch is opened, the stored energy is released in a very short pulse, typically in the nanosecond range. This produces a high-intensity burst of laser light that can be used for a variety of applications.
Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers are commonly used in dermatology for tattoo removal, pigmentation removal, and skin rejuvenation. The short pulses of high-intensity light can break up the ink particles or pigments in the skin without damaging the surrounding tissue. They are also used in ophthalmology for the treatment of glaucoma.
Working Theory
Nd:YAG laser energy is selectively absorbed by the deeper levels of the dermis and allows for treatment of deeper vascular lesions such as telangiectasias, hemangiomas and leg veins.The laser energy is delivered using long pulses which are converted into heat in the tissue. The heat impacts the vasculature of the lesions. In addition, the Nd:YAG Laser can treat at a more superficial level; by heating the subcutaneous skin (in a non-ablative manner) it stimulates neocollagenesis which improves the appearance of facial wrinkles.
